The West Bengal assembly polls have concluded, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) making significant gains in several constituencies. In Murshidabad, Gouri Sankar Ghosh of the BJP secured a lead, while in Rejinagar, Ataur Rahman of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) trailed behind. The BJP also performed well in Samserganj, where Sasti Charan Ghosh secured a lead, and in Rajganj, where Dinesh Sarkar of the BJP was ahead.
The counting process was marred by several incidents of violence and allegations of Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) tampering. The Election Commission of India (EC) ordered repolling in several booths, including in Falta, where severe electoral offences were reported.
Despite the challenges, the voter turnout in West Bengal was a record 92.47%, with over 90% turnout in both phases of polling. The EC received several complaints of EVM tampering, with at least 77 complaints filed during the second phase of voting.
Among the key candidates, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is contesting from Bhabanipur, where she will face BJP's Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, in a high-stakes battle.
