The Indian government has granted X Corp a 48-hour extension to submit a detailed report on its plan to curb the misuse of its Grok AI chatbot. The platform, formerly known as Twitter and owned by Elon Musk, must now respond to the government's concerns by January 7, 5 pm. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had initially given X Corp 72 hours to address the issue of Grok AI generating obscene and explicit content. However, the company requested an extension, citing the holidays over Christmas and New Year's. MeitY had written a strongly worded letter to X Corp on January 2, flagging the platform's failure to prevent explicit content generated using Grok AI. The letter warned that continued non-compliance could lead to the loss of legal protection under Indian law. The government's concerns stem from discussions with X Corp's compliance teams, which revealed that Grok AI's responses to political and religious issues were not adequately addressed. This led to the platform being caught off guard by MeitY's letter. The letter, addressed to X Corp's Chief Compliance Officer for India, Vinay Prakash, directed the company to submit a detailed Action Taken Report (ATR) outlining the technical measures taken to curb misuse, action against offending users and content, and systems put in place to meet mandatory crime reporting requirements. MeitY has warned that failure to comply could lead to 'strict legal consequences' against the platform, its responsible officers, and users. This move comes amidst growing concerns over social media's influence on society, with Indian lawmakers urging the government to make social media platforms accountable for their content.
