The Yamuna river's water level has dropped to around 668.5 feet, six feet below the normal level of 674.5 feet, at the Wazirabad barrage, leaving just 1-1.5 feet of water in the pondage area.

This has led to a 14-15% cut in water supply by the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), affecting localities in New Delhi, with the DJB supplying 125 million litres per day (mld) against their demand of 148mld.

Residents are feeling the pinch, with areas like Model Town, Shadipur, Tilak Nagar, and Paryavaran complex reporting acute water shortages.

The DJB is digging deeper water channels in the riverbed, but the base level at Wazirabad is uneven due to heavy siltation, further exacerbating the crisis.

The Delhi government and DJB have not issued any advisory or acknowledged the dropping water levels, unlike previous years.

Relief is expected in the coming days as the Delhi government is in talks with Haryana to procure more water.
