The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has adopted a new 3x15 scoring system, set to come into effect from January 4, 2027. The move aims to make the game shorter and more intense while keeping it tuned to broadcast demands.
The new scoring system replaces the current 3x21 system, which has been in place for the past 20 years. The BWF believes that the 3x15 system will reduce match durations, making the game more competitive and exciting for fans.
According to the BWF, the new system will also reduce player fatigue and lower the risk of injury. Tournament scheduling can be more efficient, and fans can stay engaged for full matches.
However, not everyone is in favor of the new scoring system. Two-time Olympic medallist and BWF Athletes' Commission Chair PV Sindhu has expressed mixed feelings about the change, stating that the 21-point system gives the sport more charm, rhythm, and tactical depth.
The proposal to adopt the new scoring system was put to a vote at the BWF Annual General Meeting in Denmark and passed with a two-thirds majority of votes cast.
