Miami Hurricanes fans witnessed a dismal start to their college football playoff game against Texas on Saturday, largely due to quarterback Carson Beck's struggles. Beck, a 23-year-old Georgia transfer, completed just 5 of 7 passes for a mere eight yards in the first half. Meanwhile, his counterpart, Texas' Marcel Reed, excelled with 10 of 14 completions for over 100 yards. The question on everyone's mind: why did Carson Beck leave Georgia for Miami? Beck's decision to transfer from Georgia was a surprising turn of events after he initially declared for the 2025 NFL Draft following a postseason surgery to repair a torn UCL in his throwing elbow. However, after Georgia's season ended in a loss to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff Sugar Bowl quarterfinal, Beck's plans changed. He entered the NCAA transfer portal on January 9 and announced his transfer to Miami the next day. Beck's decision to return to college football was likely influenced by his declining draft stock. Once considered a potential top overall pick, his performance in 2024 saw him throw a career-high 12 interceptions and drop his completion rate from 72.4 percent in 2023 to 64.7 percent in 2024. NFL teams graded him as a first-round to third-round prospect, according to ESPN. In an interview, Beck explained his decision to transfer, citing a desire for a fresh start after spending five years in Athens. 'I had been at Georgia for five years, and I'm super appreciative of my time there. But, I always think there is a shelf life on things and I just think it was time for a fresh start for me and I think that is what ultimately led to me coming down here at Miami,' Beck said.
