The Chicago Cubs have made their first major offseason move, acquiring right-hander Edward Cabrera from the Miami Marlins in exchange for outfielder Owen Caissie and minor leaguers Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo DeLeon. Cabrera, who turned 28 last April, had a career-high 26 starts and 137 2/3 innings for the Marlins last season, posting an 8-7 record and 3.53 ERA. He is eligible for arbitration and cannot become a free agent until after the 2028 season. The addition of Cabrera strengthens the Cubs' rotation, which also includes Matthew Boyd, Shota Imanaga, Cade Horton, and Jameson Taillon. However, Cabrera arrives in Chicago with some injury concerns, including recurring blisters on his right middle finger and a right elbow sprain that forced him to miss time last season. In the trade, the Marlins gain Caissie, who made his major league debut with the Cubs in August and could compete for a starting job with the Marlins. Caissie, a second-round pick in the 2020 amateur draft, hit .192 in 12 games with the Cubs but batted .286 with 22 homers and 55 RBIs in Triple-A Iowa last season. The Cubs finished second in the NL Central last year with a 92-70 record and made it to the playoffs for the first time since 2020. With the addition of Cabrera, they look to build on last season's success and compete for a division title in 2024. Meanwhile, the Cubs also claimed left-hander Ryan Rolison off waivers from the Chicago White Sox, further bolstering their pitching staff. Rolison made his big league debut with Colorado in May and has experience in the majors, adding to the team's depth and competition for starting roles.
