Italy coach Gennaro Gattuso has stepped down after the Azzurri failed to qualify for the FIFA World Cup for the third time in a row.
The development was confirmed by the Italian Football Federation, with Gattuso resigning a day after the Italian Soccer Federation president Gabriele Gravina stepped down.
Gianluigi Buffon, the national team's delegation chief, also stepped down from his post.
Gattuso had taken over the reins from Luciano Spalletti in June last year, with the squad struggling following a defeat at Norway in its opening qualifier.
Under Spalletti, Italy also crashed out in the round of 16 stage of the Euro 2024 against Switzerland.
Gattuso expressed his gratitude to President Gabriele Gravina and Gianluigi Buffon, along with everyone at the Federation, for the trust and support they have always shown him.
He also thanked the fans for their love and support for the team, stating that he will always carry the Azzurri in his heart.
