The Indian women's boxing team has received a significant boost with the appointment of Santiago Nieva as their new head coach. Nieva, a Swedish coach of Argentine descent, has extensive international experience, having held top roles in high-performance units in world boxing. He previously worked with India's men's squad from 2017 to 2022, guiding them to historic achievements, including India's highest-ever participation at the Tokyo Olympics and two medals at the 2019 Men's World Championships. Nieva expressed his excitement to return to India, where he spent five wonderful years in his previous stint. He aims to build on the team's recent success, including four medals at the World Championships and 10 medals at the World Boxing Cup Finals. Boxing Federation of India president Ajay Singh praised Nieva's appointment, saying it marks a significant step forward for the women's programme. Nieva's technical expertise and international insight will add value to the team's development. With his guidance, India's women boxers are expected to strengthen their presence at the world's biggest stages. Nieva takes over from D Chandralal, who will continue to be part of the coaching staff. The team has shown promise, and with Nieva at the helm, they are poised to achieve even greater success in the future.
