Jets Cut Ties with Allen Lazard After 3 Disappointing Seasons

The New York Jets have parted ways with veteran wide receiver Allen Lazard after nearly three unproductive seasons. The decision comes as the 30-year-old's role diminished significantly this season, despite the team's struggling offense. Lazard was signed to a four-year, $44 million contract in 2023, one of the team's biggest offseason moves. He initially showed promise with 23 catches for 311 yards and a touchdown in 14 games, but failed to live up to expectations. Although he was more productive last season with 37 receptions for 530 yards and six scores, Lazard's impact never quite materialized. The situation took a turn for the worse this season, with Lazard managing only 10 catches for 70 yards and a touchdown in 10 games. Lazard's struggles may be attributed to his reputation for dropping passes, which was a concern during his time with the Jets. The absence of top wide receiver Garrett Wilson, who has been on injured reserve since last month, did not provide Lazard with more opportunities. Instead, Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie III have emerged as regulars in the offense. Lazard's departure marks the end of an era for the Jets, who had hoped to recreate the chemistry he had with former quarterback Aaron Rodgers during their time with the Green Bay Packers. The move also comes as the Jets search for a playmaker to support struggling quarterback Justin Fields. The team has announced the release of quarterback Adrian Martinez from the practice squad, potentially paving the way for Tyrod Taylor or Fields to return from injury.
