The Kolkata leg of Lionel Messi's GOAT India tour descended into chaos on December 13, with the event at the Salt Lake Stadium being cut short from 1 hour 40 minutes to just 20 minutes. The Bidhannagar Police Commissioner, Mukesh Kumar, has attributed the fiasco to 'clear mismanagement' and has arrested Satadru Dutta, the chief organizer of the tour. According to the police, everything was under control until 10 am, but the situation escalated at 11:48 am, four minutes before Messi's departure. The crowd began shouting and throwing objects onto the field as Messi's security team escorted him out. Dutta was taken into custody at the Kolkata airport while seeing off Messi and his entourage. The police commissioner revealed that the event management team had not informed them of the expanded guest list, and water bottles were allowed inside the venue despite a no-water-bottle policy. The police are reviewing CCTV footage and more arrests are likely. Dutta has been charged under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provocation with intent to cause a riot, mischief, and assault on a public servant. He has also been booked under the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order Act and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. The Bidhannagar Police have registered two suo motu cases against Dutta and unidentified individuals in connection with the rampage. The police chief has warned that all those identified through CCTV footage will be arrested and questioned. The incident has raised concerns about the management of high-profile events and the need for better security measures.
