The Puma, a top contender at the Kentucky Derby, has been scratched due to a skin infection that caused swelling in his leg. Trainer Gustabo Delgado confirmed the news, stating that the swelling should subside within a day or two.

With no alternate taking his place, the field has been reduced to 19 horses. The Puma's withdrawal comes just hours before the race, which starts at 6:57 PM local time.

The colt, sired by Essential Quality, had been listed at 10-1 morning-line odds and was part of a team connected to the 2023 Kentucky Derby champion Mage.

The Puma's strong prep season included a Grade 3 Tampa Bay Derby win and a runner-up finish in the Grade 1 Florida Derby.
