Tanvi Sharma, the 17-year-old badminton sensation, has been making waves in the sports world with her impressive performances. Having shifted to the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati a year and a half ago, Tanvi has adapted to her new life and has been consistently delivering results. With Olympic bronze medallist Saina Nehwal retired and former world champion PV Sindhu in the twilight of her career, the future of Indian women's badminton rests on the young shoulders of Tanvi and her peers.
Tanvi's performances over the past year have been remarkable. She has been ranked junior world No.1 for six straight months and has claimed a bronze at the Asian Junior Championships and a silver at the World Junior Championships. At the senior level, she has won the Denmark Challenge and finished runner-up at both the US Open and Guwahati Masters. Her latest achievement was reaching the Orleans Masters semi-finals.
Tanvi's rise to stardom can be attributed to her technical variety, tactical soundness, and the ability to read her opponents and dictate the tempo of a match. Her attacking game, deceptive net game, and variation add a layer of flexibility, helping her overcome higher-ranked opponents. Tanvi's game has changed significantly under the guidance of her coach, Park Tae-sang, who has helped her develop her power and strokes, movement, and court coverage.
However, Tanvi's lack of stamina has held her back at times. She mostly wins her matches in straight games but struggles when matches approach the hour mark. To improve her endurance, Tanvi is working on her fitness, running, and high-intensity multi-shuttle training. With her sights set on cracking the top level, Tanvi is confident that she can achieve her goals with dedication and hard work.
Tanvi's rise hasn't gone unnoticed, and she has been signed by Olympic Gold Quest, sponsored by Momentum by Raise, and included in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme development group. She has also been included in the national team by the Badminton Association of India, which covers her participation in every tournament. Tanvi aims to move into seniors after winning a medal at the Youth Olympics in Dakar in October-November 2026.
