A recent photo from the xAI Hackathon, a high-intensity coding event in San Francisco, has ignited a firestorm on social media. The controversy began when a Twitter user shared a picture of the event, captioned 'A full audience of hardcore builders and engineers.' The image shows hundreds of people gathered in a room, working to win the competition. In the comments, Nik Pash, head of AI at Cline, made a remark that has been widely criticized as racist: 'Imagine the smell.' Pash's comment was not well-received, with many users accusing him of being insensitive and disrespecting the diversity of the event attendees. However, Cline's founder, Saoud Rizwan, has come to Pash's defense, stating that the comment was taken out of context. Rizwan explained that he and Pash work together daily and that the remark was a lighthearted reference to the often-unpleasant atmosphere of hackathons. Pash has also responded to the backlash, saying 'Appreciate it Saoud! Hackathons with packed rooms never smell great.' Despite Rizwan's defense, many users remain unconvinced, with some calling for Pash to apologize and others accusing him of perpetuating hate speech. The xAI Hackathon took place on December 6 and 7 in San Francisco, bringing together an 'amazing group of hardcore engineers' who competed for 24 hours to win the competition.
