In a poignant moment, Australian teenagers have been saying goodbye to their social media followers as a world-first ban on platforms popular with young users comes into effect. The ban, which targets around 1 million users under the age of 16, aims to regulate the use of social media among minors. As the midnight deadline approached, a flurry of farewell messages flooded platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and Reddit. Users expressed a mix of sadness, humor, and disbelief at the prospect of losing access to their favorite apps. Josh Partington, a 29-year-old Melbourne creator with over 75,000 TikTok followers, summed up the sentiment: 'I'll miss you guys.' Others shared memes, urged followers to join alternative platforms, and even edited their favorite clips. On Reddit, users expressed their concerns and emotions in various subreddits, including r/teenagers. One user, an autistic 13-year-old, wrote: 'As an autistic 13-year-old, I am devastated. My playlist of 1,400 songs on YouTube will be deleted, and Reddit too. I will be completely alone for the next three years.' Not all teenagers opposed the ban, with some seeing it as a necessary step to curb excessive screen time. One TikTok user commented: 'Ngl, social media ban is probably for the best of us. All we do is sit behind a screen for hours.' The ban has already led to the deactivation of over 200,000 accounts on TikTok, with hundreds of thousands more set to be blocked in the coming days. The Australian government has issued fines to major platforms, including TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, for failing to block underage users.
