A devastating 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Bangladesh on Friday morning, claiming at least six lives and leaving dozens injured. The tremors sent shockwaves across the region, with residents of Kolkata and other northeastern states rushing outdoors in panic. According to local reports, the quake's epicentre was located in the Ghorashal area of Narsingdi district, roughly 25 km from the capital Dhaka. The US Geological Survey confirmed the quake's depth at 10 km. Eyewitness accounts revealed the severity of the disaster, with at least three people killed after a building roof and wall collapsed, and three pedestrians crushed by falling railings. Dozens more were injured in panic-driven incidents across Dhaka, where buildings swayed sharply during the tremor. Although northern and southeastern Bangladesh are known earthquake-prone zones, the central region is typically less active, according to the USGS. The sudden quake in this region caught residents off guard, prompting a mass exodus from homes, offices, and high-rises. Tremors were felt as far as Kolkata, parts of West Bengal, and Assam's Guwahati, prompting residents to take to social media to describe the intensity. ‘Small quake but big panic,' wrote Supratim Maitra on X, highlighting the widespread alarm caused by even a brief jolt. As aftershocks are feared, rescue efforts are underway to assess the full extent of the damage and provide aid to those affected by the devastating earthquake.
