A witness to the gruesome murder of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man in Bangladesh, has shared chilling details about the killing. Das was beaten, dragged for over a kilometer, and set ablaze by a mob in Mymensingh city over allegations of blasphemy. However, the witness claims that the real reason behind the murder was jealousy over Das' job, as some people who did not get jobs spread rumors that he committed blasphemy.
The witness, who worked with Das, stated that some individuals who were denied employment spread false accusations against Das, leading to his brutal murder. 'Dipu da was called to the HR office, forced to resign, and then handed over to the mob,' the witness said. 'They thrashed him brutally, and then dragged him for over a kilometer before hanging his body from a tree and setting it ablaze.'
Das' father also corroborated the witness' account, stating that his son was killed due to jealousy over his job. 'Some people who did not get jobs conspired to kill him,' the father said. 'They had threatened to kill him multiple times if he didn't give them jobs.'
The killing has sparked outrage, with US Congressman Ro Khanna condemning the death as 'horrific' and urging people to speak out against 'vile acts of hatred and bigotry.' The Bangladesh government has maintained that there was no evidence of Das committing blasphemy. The country is currently facing unrest following the assassination of a student leader, and the security situation remains fragile.
The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has announced fresh polls in February, but the recent killing has raised concerns about the safety of the minority community in Bangladesh.
