The son and adviser of ousted Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has issued a stark warning of potential violence in the country ahead of the expected conviction of his mother for crimes against humanity. Sajeeb Wazed, who lives in Washington, DC, stated that the supporters of Hasina's party, the Awami League, will block the upcoming national election if the party's ban is not lifted. The warning comes as the country remains on edge ahead of the verdict of a special tribunal against Hasina, who has been living in exile in India since fleeing Bangladesh in August 2024. The tribunal is expected to convict her for her alleged role in a deadly crackdown on student-led protests in 2024, charges she denies. Wazed expressed confidence that the tribunal will convict his mother, stating, "They're televising it. They're going to convict her, and they'll probably sentence her to death." However, he also emphasized that India has provided his mother with full security, saying, "My mother is safe in India. India is giving her full security.
