Bangladesh will hold its 13th national election on February 12, marking a significant shift in the country's politics after the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The election date was confirmed by Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin in a televised address.
The country has been without a functioning government since August 2024, following massive protests that led to Hasina's departure to India. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has banned the Awami League party, which could give other parties a chance to compete.
The 2024 elections, which saw Hasina return to office for a fourth term, were marred by controversy and boycotts from major opposition parties. The new election promises to be a critical test of Bangladesh's democratic process and stability, coming 18 months after the tumultuous events that led to Hasina's exit.
