A heated protest erupted in Belgrade on Tuesday against a plan to demolish a historic former army headquarters to make way for a luxury hotel complex, linked to a project involving Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law. The redevelopment of the bombed-out Yugoslav Army headquarters was cleared for an expedited permit process last week, sparking outrage among students and locals. The site, which was hit during NATO strikes in the 1998-99 Kosovo war, was leased by Kushner's Affinity Partners in 2024 after its protected status as a cultural asset was lifted. However, an investigation was launched in May following allegations of document forgery, suspending the project.
