A prominent leader of Bangladesh's opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has been shot dead in the capital city of Dhaka. Azizur Rahman Musabbir, a key figure in the party's volunteer wing Swechhasebak Dal, was gunned down near the Super Star Hotel in Karwan Bazar on Wednesday night. Unidentified assailants also injured another man, Sufian Byapari Masud, who was attending an event with Musabbir. According to police, Musabbir was shot around 8:30 pm and rushed to BRB Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. The injured Masud, who is the general secretary of the Tejgaon Thana Van Workers' Union, received a gunshot wound to the abdomen and is receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Musabbir, who hailed from Shariatpur, was a BNP-backed candidate in the 2020 city corporation elections. He had spent time in jail during the Awami League regime and was arrested multiple times in connection with various political cases. His family members described him as the eldest among three siblings. This incident comes weeks after prominent student leader Sharif Osman Hadi was shot while exiting a mosque in Dhaka and later succumbed to his injuries in Singapore. The incident has sparked protests near the Sonargaon intersection, with local BNP supporters condemning the attack. Police are yet to identify the attackers, who fled the scene on foot. An investigation is underway to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
