Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro has taken a step to alleviate his persistent hiccups, undergoing a phrenic nerve block procedure over the weekend. According to his wife, Michelle Bolsonaro, the surgery aimed to address the persistent condition that had persisted despite his recent hospitalization for hernia surgery.
Following the procedure, doctors announced plans to block the left phrenic nerve within 48 hours, citing the nerve's crucial role in regulating breathing. This development comes as Bolsonaro, 70, continues to face health issues stemming from a 2018 stabbing during his presidential campaign. In addition to his ongoing health struggles, Bolsonaro is currently serving a 27-year prison sentence after being convicted of plotting a coup to overturn his 2022 election loss.
The former president has been granted temporary release from prison to undergo medical treatment, a decision made by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes at the request of Bolsonaro's defense lawyers. During his hospital stay, Bolsonaro expressed support for his son, Flavio Bolsonaro's, 2026 presidential bid. This latest health development adds to the ongoing saga surrounding Bolsonaro's health and the implications of his sentence.
