Brown University Denounces Doxxing of Student Linked to Shooting Rumors
Brown Univ and Rhode Island AG condemned online doxxing after a student was falsely linked to the shooting, warning social media speculation is dangerous.
Brown University and Rhode Island's Attorney General have condemned a doxxing attack targeting a first-year student, Mustapha Kharbouch, who was wrongly accused of being linked to a recent shooting. The incident began with social media claims spread by far-right influencers, which led to the removal of Kharbouch's bio from the university's website. In response, the university issued a statement warning against the dangers of doxxing, which can cause 'irrevocable harm' to targeted individuals. The Rhode Island Attorney General, Peter Neronha, echoed these concerns, stating that speculating about someone's involvement in a crime based on online activity is a 'dangerous road to go down.' Neronha emphasized that if Kharbouch's name held any relevance to the investigation, law enforcement would be actively searching for him and publicly disclosing that information. The incident highlights the risks of spreading unverified information and the importance of protecting individuals' online safety and well-being.
