In a significant move to boost trade relations, Canada's Minister of International Trade, Maninder Singh Sidhu, is set to visit New Delhi and Vishakhapatnam in India. This visit comes as External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is in Canada, marking a renewed focus on bilateral ties between the two nations. Sidhu's trip, which begins on Wednesday, aims to reinforce Canada's commitment to diversifying its trade relationships and attracting new investment opportunities. As one of the world's fastest-growing major economies, India presents a significant chance for Canadian businesses and workers to thrive. During his visit, Sidhu will participate in the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Partnership Summit, hosted by Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. The event is expected to facilitate ministerial meetings and discussions on potential trade and investment linkages between the two countries. The visit is part of a broader reset in the relationship between India and Canada, with Prime Minister Mark Carney's government prioritizing ties with India. The month of November has already seen a series of high-level exchanges, including External Affairs Minister Jaishankar's attendance at the G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is also expected to visit Canada later in the month. Canada's trade minister emphasized the importance of expanding commercial ties with India, citing the significant growth in bilateral trade, which surpassed CAD 30 billion in 2024. By deepening cooperation in areas such as energy, clean technology, artificial intelligence, and agriculture, Canada aims to unlock new commercial opportunities, drive innovation, and build more resilient and secure supply chains that benefit both nations.
