A major gas leak and possible explosion in Castaic, California, has left thousands sheltering in place and prompted a massive response from emergency services. The incident occurred on Saturday, December 27, near Ridge Route Rd. and Pine Crest Place, with the gas line rupture happening on a hill above the 5 Freeway just north of Lake Hughes Road. According to officials, the leak was reported at around 4:30 pm, and it quickly led to a SigAlert shutting down the freeway in both directions. All lanes of Pearblossom Highway (state Route 138) and state Route 126 were also closed. Residents in the affected area reported a strong smell of gas, with some even hearing a loud explosion that caused their houses to rattle. The fire department has urged people to stay indoors and shelter in place, but it remains unclear what caused the gas line to rupture. The Los Angeles County Fire Department has been working closely with SoCalGas to mitigate the situation, with the gas company shut off the 34-inch main gas line to allow an investigation to begin. While the situation has been largely contained, some residual gas may continue to seep out for a while. The shelter-in-place order, issued at 5:40 pm, affects much of Castaic, with residents urged to close all doors, windows, and vents, and shut off HVAC systems. The order is expected to remain in place until further notice. California Governor Gavin Newsom has been briefed on the situation, and the state's Office of Emergency Services is assisting with the response. The incident is expected to cause significant disruptions to traffic, with the 5 Freeway remaining closed in both directions. The gas leak has also raised concerns about the safety of nearby communities, including Granada Hills, Porter Ranch, and Sylmar. While no evacuation orders have been issued, residents in the affected area are advised to stay indoors and follow all instructions from emergency services.
