Castaic Gas Leak Spreads to Surrounding Areas, LAFD Issues Shelter-in-Place Order | Los Angeles
The California Highway Patrol has closed all northbound and southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway at Lake Hughes Road. A shelter-in-place order has been issued.
A potentially hazardous situation is unfolding in northern Los Angeles County, where a natural gas leak has prompted a shelter-in-place order in the Castaic area. The leak, reported on Saturday at 4:20 p.m. from a 36-inch underground main line near Ridge Route Road and Pine Crest Place, has led to widespread concerns and disruptions.
According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, there is no immediate threat to the city, but the situation is being closely monitored. The affected area includes homes in the CAS-SLOAN region, bounded by the Ninetynine Oaks community to the south, the Castaic Town Center to the north, Interstate 5 to the west, and Sloan Canyon Road to the east.
Residents in nearby communities, including Granada Hills, Santa Clarita, Stevenson Ranch, and Valencia, have reported a strong gas odor, prompting concerns about the safety of the area. In response, the California Highway Patrol has closed all northbound and southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway at Lake Hughes Road, diverting traffic to alternative routes.
A natural gas leak occurs when methane gas escapes from pipes, appliances, or underground lines, often due to damaged pipes, faulty appliances, corrosion, or improper installation. Signs of a leak include a strong, unpleasant odor, hissing sounds near pipes or appliances, dying vegetation, or unusually high gas bills.
While the cause of the Castaic leak is still unknown, authorities are working to contain the situation and prevent any potential harm to the public. In the meantime, residents are advised to stay indoors and follow evacuation instructions if necessary.
