In a shocking turn of events, Victoria Sorocean, a Moldovan national and convicted killer, has been taken into custody by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a three-year ordeal. Sorocean was convicted of premeditated murder with exceptional cruelty in 2013 for her role in torturing and throwing a victim out of a ninth-floor window. Initially arrested by ICE in 2020 under the Trump administration, she filed multiple appeals and asylum claims, delaying her removal. In a surprising move, she was released back into the US in 2022 under the Biden administration. However, her freedom was short-lived as ICE agents re-arrested her on November 4. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Sorocean and an accomplice brutally tortured a person in an apartment in Chisinau, Moldova, before throwing them out of the window. She was sentenced to 17 years in prison but fled the country to avoid serving her sentence. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin expressed shock and outrage at Sorocean's release, stating that the Biden administration allowed a 'cruel and violent' individual to enter the US. She emphasized that 70% of ICE arrests involve individuals charged or convicted of crimes in the US, including foreign fugitives like Sorocean. Sorocean will remain in ICE custody as the agency initiates removal proceedings. The incident highlights the complexities of immigration enforcement and the challenges of keeping violent criminals out of the country.
