Cuba Debunks 'Black Hole' Label, Vows to Tackle Caribbean Drug Trafficking
CUBA-USA/DRUGS (TV, PIX):Cuba says island is no 'black hole' on drug trafficking route to US
HAVANA: Cuba's top law enforcement officials have refuted claims that the island is a hub for drug trafficking, emphasizing its commitment to combating narcotics in the Caribbean. Colonel Ybey Carballo, chief of Cuba's Border Guard, acknowledged that the island cooperates with the US Coast Guard, providing crucial intelligence on suspected drug traffickers.
According to Carballo, Cuba has shared over 1,500 tips and intelligence on drug traffickers with the US Coast Guard since 1990, demonstrating its long-standing dedication to fighting the drug trade. The island's strategic location makes it a key transit point between South America and the US, with the US State Department confirming that Cuba is not a major consumer, producer, or transit point for illicit narcotics.
Despite the US's recent escalation of military activity in the Caribbean and Pacific, targeting alleged drug-trafficking boats, Cuba claims to have not seen a significant increase in drug-running activity around its shores. The Cuban government has criticized the US strikes and accused Washington of seeking to overthrow the Venezuelan government, a key ally of Cuba.
Cuba's proactive approach in the fight against drug trafficking has contributed to regional security, particularly for the US, as many boats suspected of trafficking drugs are headed towards American shores. The island's cooperation with the US Coast Guard underscores its commitment to tackling the issue, dispelling the notion that Cuba is a 'black hole' for drug trafficking.
