A glimmer of hope has emerged in the aftermath of a tragic National Guard shooting in Washington, DC. Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, who was left critically wounded in the incident, has begun to show signs of improvement. According to West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey, Wolfe has responded to medical staff, displaying a thumbs-up and even wiggling his toes. The shooting, which occurred on an unspecified date, claimed the life of Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20. The suspect, Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was shot by another National Guard member and taken into custody. He remains hospitalized. Governor Morrisey emphasized that Wolfe's progress should not be taken as a definitive medical evaluation, stating, 'I'm not the doctor.' However, the news has brought some solace to the West Virginia National Guard community, which has rallied together in grief. Maj. Gen. Jim Seward, adjutant general for the West Virginia National Guard, described the Guard as a 'family of over 6,000' and expressed the community's deep sense of loss. 'When we lose one, every guardsman I've talked to is grieving,' he said. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, with Governor Morrisey confirming that he has spoken with President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi. He stressed that the state will not speculate about the incident, but will instead rely on facts to guide its response. 'Justice must be done,' he said, 'and it will be done through our criminal justice system.'
