A fatal shooting occurred at St. Louis Lambert International Airport early Friday morning when an airport police officer shot a man wielding a knife. The incident took place around 1 a.m. outside Terminal 1, near the light rail line that connects travelers to the terminal. The area is not behind a security checkpoint, and the rail line was temporarily closed for about three hours before reopening. Passengers were redirected to shuttle services. The airport remained open throughout the incident. According to St. Louis County Police spokesperson Vera Clay, officers noticed the man in an unauthorized area and attempted to escort him away. However, he refused to leave and displayed a knife when confronted by the officers. Despite the use of Tasers, the man continued to advance toward the officers, prompting one of them to fire their gun, resulting in the man's fatal wounding. Clay stated that the investigation will focus on determining the man's purpose for being in the area and why he needed to be removed. The two officers involved have a combined 1.5 years of service, including prior law enforcement experience. The airport's police department is cooperating with the St. Louis County Police in the ongoing investigation.
