A fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip was tested on Wednesday when four Israeli soldiers were injured in a clash with Palestinian militants. The incident occurred during a military operation in the eastern Rafah area, where soldiers encountered militants who emerged from an underground tunnel network. According to the Israeli military, one soldier was severely injured, while two others and a non-commissioned officer suffered moderate injuries. The wounded soldiers were evacuated to a hospital for medical treatment, and their families were notified of their condition. The Israeli government has accused Hamas of violating the ceasefire agreement, which was brokered by the US and came into effect on October 10. The ceasefire has largely halted fighting between the two sides, but tensions remain high. The Israeli military has been targeting militants in the area, killing over 40 in operations aimed at dismantling tunnels near Rafah. Hamas estimates that between 60 to 80 of its fighters are still holed up in the tunnel network. The Gaza conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, resulting in the deaths of 1,221 people. Israel's retaliatory assault on Gaza has killed at least 70,117 people, according to the territory's health ministry. Since the ceasefire, 360 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, while three Israeli soldiers have been killed during the same period.
