France Shaken: Thousands Demand Action Against Domestic Violence Amid Rising Femicides

Tens of thousands of protesters braved the cold in cities across France on Saturday, voicing outrage over the persistent issue of violence against women. Organised by the Greve feministe collective, the protests aimed to pressure the government into taking concrete actions and allocating sufficient funds to address the scourge. Demonstrators in Paris, estimated to be between 50,000 and 17,000, waved signs and chanted slogans as they marched through the capital. The protests highlighted disturbing statistics, including a woman being killed by her partner or ex-partner every 2.5 days in France. According to the national femicide victims' federation, nine out of 10 victims know their attacker. "It's 2025, and it's not normal to count our dead women," said Sylvaine Grevin, president of the federation, whose sister was a victim of femicide in 2017. Protesters in other cities wore purple, a colour associated with feminism, and chanted slogans like "We have the right to be loved without being abused.
