A Philippine court has handed down life sentences to a Chinese national, Alice Guo, and seven others for their involvement in a massive human trafficking operation. Guo, who had posed as a Filipina to become the mayor of a town north of Manila, was found guilty of overseeing a sprawling online gambling complex where hundreds of people were coerced into running scams. The complex, which included luxury villas and a swimming pool, was raided in March 2024 after a Vietnamese worker escaped and alerted the authorities. Over 700 individuals from various nationalities were rescued from the site, along with documents showing Guo's alleged connection to the compound's ownership. Prosecutors said Guo and three others were convicted of organizing trafficking, while four others were found guilty of acts of trafficking. Guo, 35, had fled the Philippines in September 2024 but was eventually arrested by Indonesian authorities. The case highlights the transnational nature of the human trafficking industry in Southeast Asia, with thousands of scammers estimated to have been involved in 2023. The UN reported that victims in the region were conned out of up to $37 billion in that year, with global losses potentially much higher. The Philippine government has since taken steps to address the issue, with President Ferdinand Marcos announcing a ban on offshore gambling operations in 2024. The move came after public outrage over the Guo case, which has shed light on the country's lax regulations and the exploitation of foreign nationals in the industry.
