Residents in Gaza City's Shujaiya neighborhood are fleeing their homes after Israeli forces placed large yellow concrete blocks along the withdrawal line, marking the boundary between Israeli-controlled territory and the Gaza Strip. The move has sparked concern among residents, who fear increased gunfire and displacement. Under the US-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, Israeli troops withdrew to positions behind the so-called Yellow Line, but remain in control of more than half the territory. Since the fragile ceasefire took effect on October 10, there have been multiple incidents involving Israeli forces firing on people approaching or crossing the Yellow Line. For Shujaiya's residents, the yellow blocks have become a constant reminder of the danger that lies ahead. Ibrahim Farahat, a resident, said the block was placed in front of his house, moving the boundary closer to his home. 'Things were fine, it was far from us,' he added. 'Now gunfire is reaching our house.' Many residents, including Fadi Shafiq Hararah and Akram Jaradah, have decided to leave the neighborhood, adding to the growing number of displaced people in Gaza. Jaradah, who has been displaced 16 times since the start of the war, said the Yellow Line means the army will constantly be present in the area, posing a danger to residents. The Israeli military claims it is simply marking the Yellow Line and not expanding it. However, an investigation by The Wall Street Journal suggests that Israel has sent reinforcements and installed water points along the line, allegedly breaching the ceasefire agreement. Hamas has accused Israel of escalating violations, citing the Yellow Line's daily westward advance and the mass displacement of residents. The situation in Gaza remains tense, with both Hamas and Israel accusing each other of violating the ceasefire. The international community is closely watching the developments, as the fragile peace process hangs in the balance.
