The longest US government shutdown has come to an end, with President Donald Trump signing a bill to reopen the federal government. As a result, millions of Americans who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can expect to receive their benefits within 24 hours. According to USDA spokesperson Alec Varsamis, most states will be able to distribute funds to recipients 'within 24 hours' once the government reopens. The newly passed spending package will fund the USDA through 2026 and restore SNAP benefits to their original levels until September 2026. However, some states may experience delays in resuming normal SNAP benefit levels due to paused processes during the shutdown. In a separate development, Colorado Governor Jared Polis has announced that the state will deliver 100% of November SNAP payments to approximately 600,000 residents as soon as possible. The federal government's reopening has brought relief to hardworking Americans, with Colorado's Governor Polis thanking food banks, the Department of Human Services, and local communities for their efforts during the shutdown. The House has passed the funding bill in a 222-209 vote, restarting paychecks for federal workers, funding food assistance programs, and paying air traffic controllers. The legislation aims to 'reopen the government, restore critical services, and put an end to the hardship inflicted on the country,' according to GOP House Appropriations Committee Chairman Tom Cole. With the government shutdown finally over, millions of Americans can look forward to resuming their SNAP benefits in the coming days.
