The US government shutdown, now in its 41st day, may finally come to an end as a new deal gains momentum in the Senate. Eight Democrat Senators have switched their support to the Republican spending bill in exchange for a vote on the child tax credit in December. The key vote on the shutdown took place on Sunday evening, with Senate Majority Leader John Thune announcing that a final vote could happen as early as Monday. The new deal, backed by Senators Dick Durbin, Catherine Cortez Masto, John Fetterman, Maggie Hassan, Jeanne Shaheen, Tim Kaine, Jacky Rosen, and Angus King, requires the US Congress to complete several procedural formalities before the House can vote on the bill. Once passed, it will need President Trump's signature to officially end the shutdown. In a statement, President Trump said he supports the new Senate deal and will sign the bill when it reaches his desk. The deal aims to keep the government funded till January 2026 and has sparked hope that the longest government shutdown in US history may soon come to an end.
