A shocking security incident occurred at Honduras' National Congress on Thursday when an opposition lawmaker was injured by an explosive object. Gladis Aurora Lopez, a member of the National Party, was targeted by an explosive device allegedly thrown by individuals linked to the ruling Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre).
According to the National Party, the device exploded just inches away from Lopez, causing severe injuries. Footage shared on social media shows the moment the device was hurled at Lopez from behind, striking her in the back. Pictures reveal her jacket torn apart, with visible blood marks and bruising.
The attack comes as Honduras grapples with deep-seated political tensions following the closely contested presidential election on November 30. Centrist candidate Salvador Nasralla has challenged the outcome, demanding recounts in several regions after the National Party's nominee, Nasry Asfura, was declared the winner by a narrow margin.
Asfura is set to be sworn in as president on January 27, despite ongoing legal challenges and political uncertainty. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of lawmakers and the stability of the country's democratic process.
