US immigration authorities have apprehended an Afghan national in Virginia who allegedly provided material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria-Khorasan (ISIS-K). Jaan Shah Safi, arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Waynesboro, was admitted to the US under the Biden administration's 'Operation Allies Welcome' program in 2021. Safi's detention comes after a shooting in Washington, DC, left one West Virginia National Guard member dead and another wounded. The suspect in that shooting, Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was shot by another Guard member and taken into custody. According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Safi 'provided support to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria-Khorasan (ISIS-K) and also provided weapons to his father, a commander of a militia group in Afghanistan.' DHS also noted that Safi's application for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) was terminated after Secretary Kristi Noem ended TPS for Afghans. The arrest marks the third instance in less than a week of an 'Afghan national terrorist released into the country by the Biden administration,' according to DHS. Secretary Noem stated that President Trump has been working to address the national security crisis created by the Biden administration's decision to admit nearly 190,000 unvetted Afghan aliens into the US.
