Iran's military has seized a Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker, the Talara, in the Strait of Hormuz, the first such incident in months. The US official confirmed the seizure, which occurred when the ship was traveling from the United Arab Emirates to Singapore. According to the US Navy, a drone had been monitoring the area above the Talara for hours before the seizure took place. Private security firm Ambrey reported that three small boats were involved in the assault, which forced the ship to enter Iranian territorial waters. This incident comes amid heightened tensions in the region following a 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June. Iran has been warning of potential retaliation after the US struck its nuclear sites during the conflict. The US Navy has previously blamed Iran for a series of limpet mine attacks on vessels in 2019, as well as a fatal drone attack on an Israeli-linked oil tanker in 2021. The Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world's oil is traded, has long been a point of contention between Iran and the West. The seizure of the Talara marks a concerning escalation in tensions, with the US Navy patrolling the region to keep the waterways open. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of shipping in the region and the potential for further conflict.
