A security officer was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting in southern Iran, as protests against the country's economic woes continue to escalate nationwide. According to reports, Mahmoud Haghighat, a diligent personnel of the Iranshahr Law Enforcement Command, was chased by unidentified armed assailants and shot at in the Sistan and Baluchestan province. A video of the incident, recorded from the attackers' vehicle, shows Haghighat's car losing control and crashing after being fired upon. The Iranian government has confirmed the officer's death, but remains tight-lipped about the perpetrators. Militant group Jaish al-Adl has, however, claimed responsibility for the killing. The protests, which began with a shutdown of Tehran's bazaar on December 28, have now spread across the country, with security personnel using tear gas to disperse demonstrators. Activists report that the agitation is now nationwide, with the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei-led regime facing increased pressure to address the economic crisis. Despite the chaos, daily life in Iran remains relatively unaffected, with protests still localized in rural towns and major cities.
