Federal authorities have identified Brian Cole, a 30-year-old resident of Woodbridge, Virginia, as the suspect behind the pipe bombs planted outside the Republican and Democratic National Committee headquarters on the eve of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot. According to law enforcement sources, Cole was taken into custody on Thursday and is set to appear in federal court in Washington, D.C. at 1 p.m. The exact charges against him have not been disclosed.
The pipe bombs, which were safely disarmed and did not cause any injuries, were discovered on January 6, 2021, near the DNC and RNC offices in Washington, D.C. Surveillance footage captured a hooded suspect placing the devices, which were deemed viable and potentially deadly by the FBI. The suspect was seen wearing a face mask, glasses, a gray hoodie, gloves, and distinctive Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes with a yellow logo.
The FBI released multiple photos and video clips of the suspect over the years, raising the reward to $500,000 in an effort to identify the individual responsible for the explosives. The incident occurred just hours before a crowd of Donald Trump supporters arrived in Washington, D.C. to protest the 2020 election results.
