Former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers has stepped away from public life following the release of emails between him and Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced financier. The controversy centers around a series of exchanges in 2018-2019, where Summers, then a Harvard University professor, sought advice from Epstein on his pursuit of Chinese economist Keyu Jin. Keyu Jin, a Beijing-born economist specializing in international macroeconomics, was a mentee of Summers at the time. She is currently a professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and serves on the boards of Credit Suisse and the World Economic Forum. The emails, released by the US House Oversight Committee, reveal a complex and potentially problematic relationship between Summers and Jin. While Summers described Jin as a "mentee," their exchanges raised concerns about blurred professional boundaries. In one email, Summers told Epstein that he thought he was "in the seen very warmly in rear view mirror category" with Jin. Epstein, on the other hand, advised Summers to pursue Jin, saying she was "already beginning to sound needy.
