Fox News host Laura Ingraham has reignited a five-year-old conspiracy theory claiming U.S. Congresswoman Ilhan Omar married her brother. Despite being thoroughly debunked by fact-checkers, conservative media voices continue to amplify the baseless allegations. The origin of the rumor dates back to 2016, during Omar's campaign for the Minnesota House of Representatives. An anonymous post on a Somali-American online forum alleged that Omar's 2009 civil marriage to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi was a sham, claiming he was her biological brother. The claim was later spread through conservative blogs and social media platforms. However, fact-checking websites such as Snopes, PolitiFact, and others have consistently found no credible evidence to support the allegations. Public records, including refugee-resettlement documents, list Omar as the youngest of seven children, with none of them matching Elmi's name. Moreover, U.S. immigration laws do not require siblings to resort to sham marriages to gain legal status. Ilhan Omar has repeatedly denied the allegations, calling them 'absurd and offensive.' In response to recent posts targeting her on social media, she wrote, 'The only thing that is confirmed is your stupidity. Hope that helps.' Despite the lack of evidence, the conspiracy theory continues to circulate, highlighting the need for responsible media practices and the importance of fact-checking in preventing the spread of misinformation.
