Ludwig Minelli, the 92-year-old founder of the Swiss right-to-die organisation Dignitas, has passed away by assisted suicide. In a tribute, Dignitas described him as a 'pioneer and warrior' who dedicated his life to the values of 'freedom of choice, self-determination, and human rights.' Dignitas, a membership association that aims to promote 'dignity in life and death,' was founded by Minelli in 1998. The group's motto, 'To live with dignity. To die with dignity,' reflects its mission to empower individuals to make informed choices about their own lives. According to Dignitas, Minelli was a trailblazer who spent his career advocating for human rights and autonomy. Before founding Dignitas, he worked as a journalist and studied law, graduating in 1981. He was admitted to the bar of attorneys in 1986 and was known for his commitment to upholding human rights as enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights. On the topic of assisted suicide, Dignitas notes that only a small percentage of seriously ill people who turn to the organisation ultimately choose to end their lives. However, knowing that the option is available can provide relief and courage for those struggling with their circumstances. Minelli himself once said, 'We have to struggle to implement the last human right in our societies, which is the right to make a decision on one's own end, and the possibility to have this end without risk and without pain.'
