Lula Fires Back at Merz: Experience Brazil's Vibrant Culture, Not Just its Climate

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva responded sharply to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's criticism of the host city for the COP30 climate talks in Belem. Merz had described the Amazonian city as 'hot and humid' during his visit, saying he was eager to return to Berlin. However, Lula suggested that Merz should have explored the city's rich culture instead of focusing on the weather. 'He should have gone dancing, tasted the local cuisine, and experienced the beauty of Para,' Lula said. The exchange comes after Merz faced backlash from local authorities and Brazilians on social media, who compared his comments to Germany's infamous 2014 World Cup loss to Brazil. Para Governor Helder Barbalho called Merz's comments 'prejudiced,' while the city's Mayor Igor Normando described them as 'arrogant and prejudice.' In an attempt to smooth things over, Merz's office released a statement expressing regret over not being able to fully experience the Amazon region's natural beauty. German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider, however, praised the 'wonderful people of Brazil' for their 'warm hospitality' during the COP30 conference.
