A devastating maritime disaster has unfolded off the Malaysia-Thailand border, with hundreds of migrants feared missing after their vessel sank on Sunday. According to the Malaysian maritime authority, 10 survivors and one body have been recovered, including three Myanmar men, two Rohingya men, one Bangladeshi man, and a Rohingya woman. The migrant boat, carrying approximately 300 people from Myanmar, had set off from Buthidaung and was attempting to reach Malaysia. However, as they approached the border, they were instructed to transfer to three smaller boats, each carrying around 100 people, in an apparent attempt to evade detection by authorities. The status of the two other smaller boats remains unknown, with a search-and-rescue operation ongoing. First Admiral Romli Mustafa, director of the northern Malaysian maritime authority, noted that more victims may still be found at sea, three days after the sinking. This tragic incident highlights the perilous journey faced by many Rohingya migrants, who flee Myanmar due to persecution and lack of citizenship. The international community is closely monitoring the situation, and efforts are being made to provide assistance to those affected.
