Bamako, Mali - In a move seen as an escalation of tensions, Mali's ruling junta has suspended two French television channels for broadcasting what it calls 'false information' about a fuel blockade imposed by a militant group linked to al-Qaida. The High Authority for Communication in Mali claimed that TF1 and LCI made 'unverified claims and falsehoods' in a November 9 broadcast, prompting the suspension of their services in the country. Mali's junta disputes statements made by the channels, including claims that the sale of fuel has been banned, key towns are under blockade, and the capital is under threat. The fuel shortage caused by the blockade has led to long queues at gas stations and worsened the security situation in Mali. The Sahel region has seen a surge in attacks and civilian casualties since the military took power, with several Western embassies advising their citizens to leave the country. The suspension of the French channels has raised concerns about freedom of expression and the spread of misinformation in Mali.
