In a surprise move, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) announced her resignation from the US Congress, effective January 5, 2026. The decision comes amid a public feud with former President Donald Trump, who withdrew his endorsement and labeled Greene a 'traitor' and 'ranting lunatic'. As the Georgia midterm elections approach, Greene's resignation has sparked a special election to fill her seat in the 14th Congressional District. According to the US Constitution, a writ of election will be issued by Republican Governor Brian P. Kemp, setting the date for the special election. The primaries, where the Republican candidate will be chosen, are scheduled for May 19, 2026, with a primary runoff on June 16. Several candidates have already announced their intentions to run, including Clarence Blalock (D), Star Black, Elvis Casely, and Jeff Criswell (R), as well as Rob Ruszkowski (I). Notably, Trump had called for Greene's defeat in the primaries, but has yet to endorse a candidate. The special election will be held to fill Greene's seat, which will be vacant after her resignation on January 5, 2026.
