Pakistan's opposition party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has claimed that over 1,000 of its supporters were arrested by authorities ahead of a massive protest against the 'Asim Law' in the country. The protest, which was set to take place across Punjab province, was aimed at demanding the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been in jail since August 2023.
According to PTI leader Moeen Riaz Qureshi, the police arrested the party workers in Lahore and stopped vehicles of senior leaders, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister Sohail Afridi, from entering the city. Afridi had arrived in Lahore to lead the protest, but was met with a strong police presence at the entry points.
The protest was planned in response to Khan's recent appeal to Afridi, in which he urged the party to launch a street movement against the 'Asim Law', a term used to describe the current ruling government in Pakistan. Khan, who is facing several corruption cases, has been critical of the government and has called for 'Haqeeqi Azadi' or true freedom for the nation.
While the Punjab government has welcomed the PTI leaders, it has made it clear that it will not tolerate any lawlessness. The government has blocked entry and exit points to prevent PTI workers from gathering in Lahore. The PTI has attempted to hold nationwide protests twice before, but this time, the authorities seem to be taking a firmer stance.
The situation in Pakistan remains tense, with both the PTI and the government dug in their positions. The arrest of PTI workers has sparked outrage among the party's supporters, who see it as an attempt to suppress their freedom of expression and assembly.
