A 10-month-old girl, Nalaya Crew, has been found safe after an Amber Alert was issued on Sunday morning. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department confirmed that Crew was recovered without harm, thanks to a swift response from the authorities. Two suspects, 19-year-old Michelle Hemphill and her 23-year-old boyfriend, Timothy Lee Smith Jr., were taken into custody. According to reports, the couple was believed to have taken Crew from her family, who expressed concerns that the infant could be in danger due to Hemphill's homeless status and inability to care for the child. An Amber Alert was issued on Saturday evening after Crew was reported missing at 7:01 pm. The alert was triggered by a search by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, who were working with the family to locate the missing infant. Crew was described as approximately 2 feet tall, weighing 20 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Hemphill and Smith were last seen entering a blue minivan near the 6600 block of Monroe Road, prompting an urgent search operation. The Amber Alert system, which uses widely publicized notices to warn the public about recently abducted or missing children, was instrumental in ensuring Crew's safe recovery. The US Justice Department's AMBER Alert Program, named after Amber Hagerman, a young girl abducted and killed in 1996, has been successful in locating missing children in numerous cases. The program's name has also been interpreted as an acronym for America's Missing: Broadcast Emergency Response.
