New York City Launches Innovative $1,200 Monthly Cash Program for Young Homeless
New York City launches Cash with Care initiative providing $1,200 monthly to support youth facing housing insecurity.
New York City is taking a bold step to combat homelessness among young people with the launch of its new Cash with Care program. The initiative, a joint effort between the city council and Covenant House New York, provides 60 young New Yorkers aged 18 to 24 with a monthly stipend of $1,200 for nine months, along with a one-time payment of $5,000.
The program aims to stabilize the lives of its participants by addressing basic needs such as food, utilities, and rent. Officials believe the guaranteed income will create pathways to self-sufficiency and long-term stability for its recipients.
Eligible participants must be experiencing housing insecurity and will be selected from a pool of applicants. The program, funded through $1.5 million from the state's federal budget, will track its effectiveness by monitoring outcomes such as obtaining permanent housing, improving food security, and reducing debt.
Council Speaker Adrienne Adams emphasized the importance of investing in young people, stating, 'When we invest in young people, we're investing in the future of our entire city.' The program's goal is to support youth in securing permanent housing and addressing their basic needs, providing them with the resources needed to thrive.
